The other night I attended an event at my college. We watched an exclusive film screening of Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston, directed by Whitney Smith. It was a wonderful, intriguing documentary about Halston - how he came about, how he lived, who he mingled with, and so on. It was in addition to a few quirky stories from Halston's personal friends, such as Liza Minnelli, Andre Leon Talley, Billy Joel, Diane von Furstenberg, Naeem Kahn, Philip Bloch, Pat Cleveland, and many more.

Halston was a legendary American fashion designer. He was the first to create sweater sets and introduced "casual chic". Speaking of casual chic, he was the first to use ultrasuede, a synthetic fabric that felt like luxury. He was also the first American designer to enter China's market as well as attempting to introduce his luxury brand into a lower-priced market (JC Penney). However, he was way ahead of his time & that idea didn't work out so well for him back then.

Known for his wild dinner parties in his apartment, he also frequented Studio 54 and traveled the world glamorously with his entourage of models. Halston worked hard and lived his life to his fullest. Unfortunately, that also led to his downfall which ultimately led to his death.

Nonetheless, he was probably the only man who could look at fabric spread out on the floor and cut it up without any patterns or measurements & create a stunning dress without a single seam. Amazing.

After the screening, we were treated with a lovely Q&A session with the director Whitney Smith, 70s supermodel Pat Cleveland, and stylist Philip Bloch. It was interesting to hear such personal stories from those who were close to him. Whitney talked about a bit about his filming process as well.

I definitely recommend this film. It was not only delightful, but it was educational & charming. If you're in New York City, you can see the film at the IFC Center. I believe it is also available on Demand :)

Tasty Thursdys: Easy Samosas

Lately, I've been flipping through Real Simple and I really like the recipes featured within their magazine. I found this recipe for Easy Samosas on their website, which makes 12, and does seem easier than I thought to make.

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons curry powder
Kosher salt and black pepper
2 cups store-bought refrigerated mashed or frozen mashed potatoes, thawed (about 16 ounces)
1 10-ounce package frozen peas, thawed
1 15-ounce package refrigerated pie crusts
1 jar mango chutney (optional)

Directions:
1. Heat oven to 375° F. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Add the curry powder, ¾ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon pepper and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the potatoes and peas.
2. Unroll the piecrusts and cut each into 6 triangles. Place a heaping tablespoon of the potato mixture in the center of each piece. Gather the corners of the dough and pinch to form a point.
3. Pinch the seams to seal. Transfer to a baking sheet.
4. Bake the samosas until golden, 22 to 25 minutes. Serve with the mango chutney, if using.

Tasty Thursdays: Shrimp, Chicken and Andouille Jambalaya

This shrimp, chicken & andouille jambalaya recipe has been submitted by Kate of Sharp Hill Designs. Looks so tasty!

Ingredients:
1 pound thick cut bacon, diced
1 1/2 pounds andouille sausage, diced
1/4 cup shortening (you may not need this…just use bacon/sausage fat)
4 1/2 cups converted Louisiana white rice
1 t. dried thyme
1 dried bay leaf
1 pound fresh pork sausage, removed from casings
4 skinless, boneless chicken thighs (we used breasts), roughly cut into 1 inch cubes
salt
3 large onions, diced
2 bell peppers, seeded and diced
5 stalks celery, diced
6 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 T. smoked paprika
1 t. cayenne pepper
1/2 t. celery salt
3 cups canned crushed tomatoes
3 cups chicken broth
2 1/2 pounds shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 bunch green onions, chopped

Directions:
Heat a large pot over high heat until it is hot, then reduce heat to medium. Render bacon with sausage and shortening in hot pot, stirring slowly with wooden spoon. Season chicken with salt and pepper. Add chicken to pot, stirring, and cook until chicken is golden brown, about 5 minutes. Add onions to pot and allow them to caramelize, about 15 minutes. Add bell peppers, celery and garlic and cook for about 5 minutes. Stir from time to time.

Add rice (or not), thyme, bay leaf, paprika, cayenne, 1 T. salt, black pepper to taste, and celery salt to pot and cook, stirring often, for 3 minutes. Increase the heat to high and add tomatoes and chicken stock to pot. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer for 15 minutes.

Season shrimp with salt and pepper and save, along with green onion, to be added at last minute. After mixture has simmered 15 minutes, add shrimp and green onions (you may want to save some green onions for garnish). Turn off heat and let everything continue to cook for 10 minutes. Remove the lid, fluff and serve.

Golden Globes Red Carpet Fashion 2012

It seemed as though mermaids were a big inspiration, with the metallic fabrics & fishtail silhouettes. Nudes/creams and black were also a big hit - there wasn't much color on the carpet, though there were a few pops here & there. My faves of the night were:

Claire Danes in J. Mendel (lately I've been drawn to black & white so her dress caught my eye, and I love the open back)Charlize Theron in Dior (loving the sparkly headband!)
Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace (she looks magnificent with the red lip)
Nicole Richie in Julien McDonald
Reese Witherspoon in Zac Posen
As for the worst, I didn't really see anyone that was dressed that badly, but some hairstyles were a big no-no (e.g. Zooey Deschanel & her bang/sideburns and Kelly Osbourne's grayish hair dye).

There were a couple of questionable looks -- for me, I'm on the fence with these dresses:

Sarah Michelle Gellar in Monique Lhuillier, which her 2 yr-old daughter picked out by the way!
Lea Michele in Marchesa (the top part just says "ice skater" to me).
All full body red carpet shots are from MTV Style.

Love Through an Unexpected Lens

Hi everyone! I know I have disappeared for a bit, but not to fret, I will be visiting all of your blogs & catching up as soon as I publish this post :) I've recently started a full-time (4 days) internship within the public relations department at Ann Taylor (part of my college's senior co-op/last semester) in addition to a short day of classes once a week so I have been occupied with that.

Anyway, I thought I'd repost this piece that I wrote on my favorite movie, Adam, which I actually wrote for my film class final last semester, but this is the edited version that was also published on my college's student blog.

Adam is a delightful, independent film that is an “impressive and oft moving tale brought to life with memorable performances and a bittersweet account of love and its entwined complexities”, as said by IMDB reviewer Jamie Ward. It has gained rave reviews from the New York Post, NPR, The Washington Times, The New York Times as well as applause and enthusiasm from general audiences on online websites such as Yahoo Movies, IMDB, and film blogs. It has been described many times as a “beautiful gem” and “beautifully crafted”, and it certainly stands out among typical independent romantic comedies. Released in 2009, and grossing $2.3 million, Adam was indeed incredibly made. It tells the story of an intelligent, autistic man falling in love with a children’s book writer/ neighbor.

Director and writer Max Mayer, says he didn’t set out to make an “issue film” with Adam, but he wanted to show a look at relationships and their challenges through an unexpected lens. He was inspired after listening to a radio interview with a man with Asperger’s.

In a 2009 interview with Cinema Blend, Mayer said, “I look for a strong personal reaction to something that feels like it will sustain me. I thought that this was an opportunity to give people a window into something that was strange and yet universal at the same time.”

The New York Times reviewer, Jeanette Catsoulis, compliments the unpredictability of the script, the delicate humor, and the lovely Manhattan locations photographed by cinematographer Seamus Tierney. Mayer intercuts scenes of Adam’s maturation with scenes of the Buchwald family’s disintegration to show the audience just how important support groups are during trying times. Furthermore, he manages to make a film that’s funny but meaningful and give the audience characters to care about instead of laugh at and forget.

Hugh Dancy did a brilliant job performing as Adam Raki. The way he moved, talked, and limited his facial expressions was convincing. As noted by The Washington Times, “Mr. Dancy’s turn as the titular character strikes just the right balance by displaying the Asperger’s symptoms without making a huge show of them. This isn’t the over-the-top performance, and the few times he really lets loose – as he does in a surprising moment of rage at Beth – the effect is intense. Miss [Rose] Byrne, meanwhile, charms as the single daughter reconciling her anger at her father with her love for her family.”

Another reviewer said, “Playing a character who is mentally disabled can be a fast track to Oscar or to oblivion, and rare is the actor who can resist the statuette-winning, Hanks-Hoffman strategy of mannered tics and mechanical talk. And when you consider that not even Sean Penn could pull it off without making our eyeballs cringe, the performance of Hugh Dancy in the charming romantic comedy, Adam, is all the more impressive.”

Adam was a breath of fresh air, and many audiences agree and still enjoy the movie a couple of years after its release. A reviewer on Static Mass Emporium, who actually has Asperger’s, recently posted his opinion of the film just a few months ago: “A film like Adam is something of a rarity. Not only is the main character Aspergic, but the portrayal is in no way stereotypical negative or crying out for attention. Instead, it’s beautifully told and for someone like me, Adam is extremely easy to relate to; he does many of the things I do and his situations have quite often reflected my own. There’s also a wonderful humor to it, like when Beth gives him a box of chocolates and he remarks, ‘I’m not Forrest Gump, you know!’”

Not to get too heavy, but the German philosopher Nietzsche’s theory of how one can find joy outside the world of typical social expectations applies to Adam. Any movie where love or another emotion beats the square world, even if typically the passion is flawed and the price of following passion is high, relates to Nietzsche’s idea. Adam was not just a simple or typical romantic plot where two people fall in love, but instead it showed the complexity and realism of a true relationship. I personally enjoy romantic comedies, and the realism of the plot made it more appealing. In some ways, it was relatable – relationships usually stumble onto conflicts and challenges, and they don’t always end in happily-ever-afters. It wasn’t a cliché or a cookie cutter form of a typical romantic comedy. The way it was told and portrayed was refreshing and quirky with lovable characters. It shows the difficulty of unexpected challenges and surprising awkwardness. Fox Searchlight Pictures said, “Beth and Adam’s ultimate connection leads to a tricky relationship that exemplifies something universal: truly reaching another person means bravely stretching into uncomfortable territory and the resulting shake-up can be liberating.”

I recently bought a new calendar, themed "Calm Down and Have a Cocktail", and it comes with cocktail recipes for each month. I thought I'd share this month's drink: the Blizzard Martini.

Ingredients:
2 oz white chocolate liquer
1 oz vanilla-flavored vodka
1.5 oz half and half

Directions:
Pour ingredients into shaker filled with ice. Shake well, pour into martini glass. Garnish with shredded coconut.

Simone France Review

I had the lovely opportunity of reviewing Simone France's products. Simone France is the renowned French skin care expert & have worked with gorgeous women like Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Iman, Elle MacPherson, and many others.

What I first did was fill out a little survey about myself mentioning what products I already use on my phone, how often, and how I remove it, etc. Then about a day or so later, I received an email basically consulting me on what are the best products to use for my personal skin type as well as analyzing my current beauty routine.

Later on, I was sent this whole package along with simple instructions on what to use each morning and each night. I don't typically run into skin problems like acne, blotchiness, oiliness, or much dryness. However, during the wintertime (especially when it gets really cold, my skin does feel dry). I have started using this Simone France beauty package about 3 weeks ago, and maybe it's because of the warmer winter NY is having or my lack of any obvious skin problems, but I honestly don't really see a difference in the appearance of my skin.

However, my face does feel clearer. Before I used to use baby wipes to remove my makeup (easy & convenient!), but Simone France also provided me with cleansing wipes & with the beauty regimen, it doubles as a makeup remover. My face does feel fresher afterward.

Dreaming in Another Era

We are all inspired by various things and sometimes we look to the past for inspiration. As for me, I'm quite smitten with the 50s. (If you see my Tumblr, you can definitely spot many images that are from the 50s or that are reminiscent of the decade.) For me, everything about the 50s is so glamorous, sophisticated, and absolutely wonderful. The grace and beauty of this era is just so striking. I do get inspired by other decades as well like the 60s and the 20s, but the 50s is where my heart glows. Anything from this decade can instantly start a spark of imagination and gives the dose I need if I'm ever stuck in a rut.

Some of my favorite movies are from the 50s (which I highly recommend!). A Star is Born is a classic film that has been remade many times, and yes I've seen them all - but my favorite was the 1954 flick, starring Judy Garland. I guess the musicality of it also attracted me since well, you all know how much I love music. Sunset Boulevard (1950) is another favorite classic. Both movies show you a provocative look behind the celebrity "Hollywood star" world and the disturbing realities of fame & how much it can affect someone. Sigh, sometimes the lust for fame & fortune can be a terrible thing.

And who could forget the lovely Audrey Hepburn? What a true fashion icon -- she knew what looked best on her & definitely knew how to style herself in the utmost classy way. There are SO many more glamorous starlets & fashion icons in the 50s, but Audrey definitely stands out to me :)

Anyway I recently (finally!) saw Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris & absolutely loved it. The film was witty & charming, yet it also spoke out about our own personal "golden ages". Owen Wilson's character, Gil, believes that the 20s (specifically in Paris) is his dream decade. There was a scene in the film that also showed that Marion Cottilard's character, Adriana, was in love with the 1890s. Then, there was this somewhat depressing dialogue stated:

“Nostalgia is denial - denial of the painful present… the name for this denial is golden age thinking - the erroneous notion that a different time period is better than the one ones living in - its a flaw in the romantic imagination of those people who find it difficult to cope with the present.”

Woody Allen even states in an interview: "And one of the fallacies that comes up all the time is the Golden Age fallacy, that you’d have been happier at a different time. Just as people think, “If I moved to Paris I’d be happier” or “If I moved to London…” Then they do, and they’re not. Even though these places are great, they’re not happier, because it isn’t the geography that’s eating them up, it’s the existential reality of how grim a predicament we’re in. So, I’ve played around with that before, the notion of wanting to get out of the real world, get out of time."

He somewhat has a point & I haven't thought of it like that before, yet I don't fully agree. Of course we all go through those moments when we want to escape our own realities, though surely we know we'd want to return to our familiar lives once again. I know, personally, that I won't be happy being sent back to the 1950s, and actually living in that time. From where I am now, I'm content just to simply look back & admire the 50s, and incorporate my inspiration into my present life.

Tasty Thursdays: Chili-Spiced Chicken Soup

It's been freezing here in New York City lately -- yesterday morning was about 14 degrees Fahrenheit! A way that I usually warm up is to either drink a hot cup of coffee or cocoa, or sip some soup :) The following recipe for a Chili-Spiced Chicken Soup which I found on Cooking Light sounds not only healthy, but easy to make! (The recipe makes 8 servings).

Ingredients:
Spice blend:

2 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 1/2 teaspoons ground coriander
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon cracked black pepper
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Soup:

1 tablespoon canola oil, divided
1 1/4 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into 1/2-inch-wide strips
2 cups chopped sweet onion
1 cup chopped red bell pepper
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 cup chopped yellow bell pepper
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups fresh corn kernels
1 (32-ounce) carton fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth
1 (28-ounce) can fire-roasted crushed tomatoes, undrained
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

Relish:

1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1/3 cup chopped green onions
1 teaspoon grated lime rind
3 ounces queso fresco, crumbled
1 diced peeled avocado
Cilantro sprigs (optional)

Directions:
1. To prepare spice blend, combine first 6 ingredients in a small bowl.
2. To prepare soup, heat 2 teaspoons oil in a large nonstick saucepan over medium-high heat. Add chicken; sprinkle 1 1/2 tablespoons spice blend over chicken. Sauté 8 minutes or until done; cool. Chop chicken; set aside.
3. Heat remaining 1 teaspoon oil in pan over medium-high heat; add onion, bell peppers, garlic, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Sprinkle vegetable mixture with remaining spice blend; sauté 8 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Stir in chicken, corn, broth, and tomatoes; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer 15 minutes. Add lime juice.
4. To prepare relish, combine chopped cilantro and next 4 ingredients (through avocado).
5. Ladle 1 1/4 cups soup into bowls; top with 1/4 cup relish. Garnish with cilantro sprigs, if desired.

ABC Family/Jane by Design Challenge #7 - Get The Look

Hi everyone! Jane by Design premiered last night on ABC Family :) For those who missed it, it's about a high school girl, Jane, that applies for an internship at a fashion house, Donovan Decker, but gets mistaken for the assistant position. The show presents how she juggles life between both worlds in addition to tons of fabulous fashion & even cute boys. Here's an extra clip from the show!

Well anyway, here is the FINAL challenge of the ABC Family/Jane by Design Style Challenge & I am so thankful for having such great fellow bloggers that have been supporting me & commenting on the Facebook wall for me -- so BIG THANK YOU to you guys, you rock!

So, the final task is: Choose one person you have observed and write a “get the look” entry on your blog. Tell your readers to share their “get the look” tips here and mention the name of your blog. As I watched the first episode, I noticed that Jane Quimby's look is very fun, youthful, and playful -- it reminded me of what I liked when I was in high school. However, I was more drawn to India de Beaufort's character, India Jourdain. Her looks were edgier, sophisticated, and definitely things that I would personally wear. She plays an associate designer that's pining for Gray Chandler Murray's job & she's a feisty character -- someone definitely who you might love to hate. Who doesn't like a great villain?This gray asymmetrical sleeve bandage dress is originally from Herve Leger. I found two similar dresses from Flirt Catalog & Free People.
As for her Vintage Hero diamond round pave ring, I found some great deals on similar-looking ones -- from Amazon, Emitations, and Overstock!
In the episode, India was also wearing these great scallop dangling earrings from Cake and black platform pumps from Miss Sixty. Some more affordable items I found were these great Timeless Home Decors & Forever 21 earrings. As for the shoes, I found ones from Lulu's, Wet Seal, and Go Jane.

ABC Family/Jane by Design Style Challenge #6 - Pretzel-Inspired Designs

I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year's Eve, and I wish you all a blissful 2012! For my NYE, I spent it at my cousins' house with a feast of food & treats, chat, laughs, and my boyfriend even stopped by to ring in the New Year with us.

I planned to publish this post tomorrow, but I will be with my cousins on a shopping spree all day! So here it is now :) As you can see, here is the next ABC Family/Jane by Design challenge! (If you're just catching up, I'm one of the participants in this challenge & ABC Family/Jane by Design sent each of us a trunk full of goodies that are numbered, corresponding to the specific challenge, and we get sent an email twice a week letting us know what to do with it!)
Task #6: Find the bag of pretzels in your trunk. Get inspired and create something that will amaze me. Post a photo to your blog and write an entry explaining your design. Ask your readers to share ways in which they were inspired to make fashion out of unexpected items here and mention the name of your blog.

I was really drawn to the pretzel sticks and the snaps rather than the original shaped pretzel. I incorporated both into great jewelry pieces. First up, this pretzel grid necklace :)

Having limited resources, I simply used a black Sharpie and colored in the pretzel sticks after scraping some of the protruding salt. I used black thread and tied the three pieces together. Then, I simply just put the necklace chain through the two outside pieces.
With the sticks, it reminded me of spikes. I've been seeing this spiked cuff around lately, and well I thought, why not make my own? Like the pretzels from the necklace, I scraped off most of the salt and colored it black. Along with some white speckled branches I pasted it onto this tortoise cuff.

Tasty Thursdays: "Garlicky" Green Beans

String beans are one of my favorite vegetables, and a fun way to jazz them up is with garlic! I found the following recipe on Delish & it serves 8 people.

Ingredients:

2 pound(s) green beans, trimmed
3 tablespoon(s) extra-virgin olive oil
3 tablespoon(s) minced fresh parsley
3 tablespoon(s) minced garlic
1 tablespoon(s) chopped fresh tarragon or 2 teaspoons dried
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
Freshly ground pepper to taste

Directions:
1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Place a large bowl of ice water next to the stove.
2. Add half the green beans to the boiling water and cook until tender-crisp, about 4 minutes. Transfer the beans with a slotted spoon to the ice water to cool. Repeat with the remaining beans. Place a kitchen towel on a baking sheet and use a slotted spoon to transfer the beans from the ice water; blot dry with another towel.
3. Just before serving, heat oil in a large Dutch oven or large skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the green beans and stir. Add parsley, tarragon, salt and pepper and cook, stirring, until heated through, 1 to 3 minutes.

ABC Family/Jane by Design Challenge #5 - Day to Night

Yay! I've made it to the next round -- and I'm so glad too; this next one was probably my favorite so far since it was more of my thing. Having experienced busy days & learning how to quick-change for multiple events in a short amount of time in addition to commuting definitely helped influence my looks.

Task #5: Take the white shirt out of your trunk (if you're just catching up, ABC Family/Jane by Design sent us a big trunk full of items which are to be used for these challenges & participants get challenges sent to us by email twice a week, that is if we make it to the next round!) and put it on your dress form. Using accessories from your own collection (or anything else you can think of), show how you would style the shirt for a day at the office. Then, change the look entirely and show me how you would style the same shirt for a dressy cocktail party. Post photos of both styles to your blog, and write an entry explaining what you did to create each look. Ask your readers to share their day-to-night styling tips here and mention the name of your blog.

Here is my look for a day at the office. I paired with a black cardigan, a printed high-waisted pencil skirt, and coral heels (which aren't so high so it's still comfortable) along with a beautiful cocktail ring and a chunky necklace. The outfit is still fun but still business appropriate. I picked that big peach ombre bag because it compliments the outfit and it's the perfect size to carry essentials... and even some extra pieces to change into for a great cocktail party after work!

I ditched the cardigan and rolled up the sleeves. I changed the printed high-waisted pencil skirt into a cute sparkly mini and exchanged the chunky necklace for a fabulous pair of cluster earrings. I kept the cocktail ring, but decided to go for this stunning black clutch. For the shoes, I went just a bit higher with these wonderful color-block heels - definitely added some color to the look. And a swipe of lipstick always make a difference!

Voilà! A day-to-night transformation in less than 5 minutes. :)

ABC Family/Jane by Design Style Challenge - Ugly Xmas Vest Makeover

I've made it to the next round of the ABC Family/Jane by Design Style Challenge! Thank you all SO much for your support. I can't thank you enough! Anyway, Challenge #4 was quite difficult but I think I pulled it off well.

Task #4: "You must use every ounce of creativity you have to turn the holiday sweater into something special. Something spectacular. I don’t care if you use scissors or glue, your fat jeans or a slice of stale fruitcake. Turn that sweater into something fresh & exciting that could be the next big trend for Holiday 2012. When you think you’ve created something innovative and amazing, whether it’s a bracelet or a mini skirt, post before and after photos to your blog, along with a step-by-step description of how you came up with your creation. Ask your readers to share their own inspired creations here and mention the name of your blog."

I looked at the buttons and I thought the button idea would be a great idea for an opening for a small wallet. I've never made a wallet before so I basically winged the whole thing & below is my result.

1) I first took a small, basic wallet of my own (a two-fold), and used that as my measurement. I used the back of the Christmas vest & traced the wallet open there -- leaving about a half inch around the perimeter.
2) Using that pattern, I traced an identical rectangle.
3) With the guiding of pins that held the two pieces together, I hand stitched one of the short sides. I then, stitched the bottom as well -- making sure you fold in the extra half inch in. (That way, the rough edges don't show.) I worked my way around & stitched the other short side. I tried making it more fun by using colored yarn.
4) I measured the width of the wallet against the front of the vest where the buttons are and cut. [I know you can also take the buttons off and sew them onto the wallet itself & make the openings, but somehow this way was easier for me.]
5) I sewed the bottom half of the strip (where the button holes are) onto one end of the width of wallet, and did the same with the button strip on the other end.
6) I closed the wallet and measured where it would fold, and pinned it.
7) Measuring cardboard, I used two small rectangles and inserted it between the fabric, one for each side of the fold.
8) Again following the guiding of the pins holding it in place, I stitched the middle, and then eventually closed it off on top. Having the cardboard inside made the wallet sturdier and less flimsy.
9) Still needing a pocket, I decided to go with the one pocket sideways. I measured the fabric on the vest as needed & cut.
10) I hand stitched the pocket on 3 sides of it, leaving a nice opening.
11) I finished it off by adding an"A" initial with fabric glitter.

With the decals on the vest, I cut each one out & pasted them onto colored paper and cardstock -- they make great Christmas cards!
Also, since collars are a great accessory right now, I thought I'd attempt my own. With the sweater vest fabric, this would be great for Holiday 2012 with a warmer feel. I measured about 1.5-2 inches of a strip of fabric - the length of it would be measured around your own neck and where you'd want it to connect. I stitched in the edges so the roughness wouldn't show, and since I didn't have any clasps, I used mine with a safety pin & it works just as great!
Using my own ombre string, I decide to use the beads on the Christmas vest & string it together to make a cute bracelet. I'm really liking the look so I might definitely try to extend it into a necklace sometime soon :)

ABC Family/Jane By Design Challenge #3 - Handbags!

So I made it to the 3rd challenge! Thanks to all of my lovely supporters! xo

Challenge #3: "Find the purse that best represents you. Post a photo to your blog & tell your readers why this purse conveys the very essence of who you are."

I think you all gorgeous readers already know my love for satchels. It's the type of handbag that I can't resist - heck, if I see a stunning one on someone else down the street, I will definitely ogle at it. Plus, aren't those tassels so fun? :)

Did you know that satchels were originally used for school books? It was most popular in the 17th century & it actually predates the backpack. What would that say about me? Hmm, well I am a big geek & I've always loved going to school and learning about something new. I usually put my studies and work before anything else, but that may also have been because of my upbringing.

I also love the simplicity and sophistication of this particular bag. It's what I aspire to be and hope that's what my image conveys. The classiness & vintage-esque of it attracts me as well. I can always draw inspiration from past decades - especially from films of the 50s, good oldie tunes, and hearing stories from previous generations.

The beautiful bag is such a great size -- perfect for fitting all of my things around & has lots of compartments inside, which I love because I definitely need organization in my life. Yes, there are a few times when spaces around the house show my items are all over the place (but hey! I know where everything is), but when it comes down to my work space or my handbag - everything is completely neat & tidy. I guess that just shows you where my creative side (go leftys!) mixes in with my Type A personality.

Tasty Thursdays: Lemon Sugar Cookies

As the holidays comes closer, cookies are a great treat & make delightful favors for those guests at holiday parties. A great twist to typical sugar cookie is to add a dash of lemon, which the following recipe from Delish shows you how to make. The recipe yields 6 dozen cookies. Yum!

Ingredients:
4 cup(s) all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cup(s) (3 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup(s) sugar
1 large egg
2 1/2 teaspoon(s) lemon extract
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
Decorative icing and candies

Directions:
1. Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl until fluffy. Beat in egg, lemon and vanilla extracts, and salt. With a mixer on low speed, beat in flour in 2 additions until blended. Divide dough into thirds; shape each into a disk and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate until firm enough to roll, about 2 hours.
2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Roll 1 piece of dough at a time, on a lightly floured surface with a floured rolling pin, to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut out desired shapes with cookie cutters; re-roll scraps. Place 1 1/2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until golden. Cool on wire racks. Decorate as desired.

ABC Family/JBDStyleChallenge #2 - Style Icon/DIY Shirt

Hi everyone! So from a previous post, you may know that I'm participating in ABC Family/Jane By Design's Style Challenge. To view my first challenge where I posted a shopping haul video, click here. I would also like to thank you all for the support so far - it means so much to me & I really appreciate it :) You guys rock!
The huge trunk of props that ABC Family/JBD sent us included a t-shirt & some fabric markers along with a dress form. The 2nd challenge was to design a t-shirt inspired by your style icon & post an image of the shirt on the dress form. I instantly knew I wanted it based on Olivia Palermo -- I absolutely adore her chic, classy style. She always manages to look polished & beautiful.

As you can tell, one of my favorite colors is blue/teal, and I was really inspired by the first look pictured here in this post - of Olivia in a floral dress from Zara. I figured some of my competitors might decide to alter the t-shirt in some way, but I wanted to keep it a simple t-shirt. After all, a white t-shirt is such a versatile piece & a key item in a wardrobe - which Olivia has proved how to make a simple white tee look so fabulous. She also has an amazing eye for accessories, and I found this beautiful brooch in my jewelry box (which used to belong to my mother) that has gemstones in similar colors of the floral dress. I wanted to make my tee to reflect this piece as well as keep it simple, girly & classy like Olivia.

I used water color paints, fabric markers, fabric glitter, and blue studs (which were leftover from my Visual Merchandising class 3 years ago - I knew I would need these items someday! haha). Instead of going for a literal floral print, I went for a more subtle/abstract look. I used shades of blue with the fabric markers and created a base floral background. I then used some water color paints of blue & green and swirled around with my paint brush. Later on, I swept water across it so the colors could blend & bleed together. I was also going for that look where the piece seems like it has been dipped in paint, which technically it was. :)

At the hem of the t-shirt, I colored it in a dark blue and also lined with silver fabric glitter. I then cinched the side of the shirt to enhance the waist. I just simply bunched up the fabric & sewed through as if a pin was holding it. On top, I glued two blue studs to make it look more appealing & hide the yarn. I finished it off by pinning the brooch.

I made it so that it's a great piece to stand alone but can work great with jackets & blazers - like I paired it below with my brown leather jacket & a striped black blazer. We know that Olivia can definitely rock a blazer!

Country Outfitter Durango Cowboy Boots

Country Outfitter, a retailer of durango boots sent me these durango crush slouch-i-tude boots to review. Super cute, no? At first, I was a bit intimidated by how pointy the toes are since I don't own that any boots with that silhouette - heels, yes but boots, my first pointy-toe ones! I tried them on and I was instantly surprised by how incredibly comfortable they are. Plus, that chain is a lovely detail & there's also option to remove it if I want to.

The color is great as well. It's perfect to go along with almost anything (although I was crushing on a tan pair), but I thought the brown ones would allow me to wear it all year round. I definitely look forward to wearing these cuties more often :)

ABC Family/Jane By Design Style Challenge #1

Hi there, lovelies! So you all may know that I have been chosen as one of the participants of ABC Family/Jane by Design's Style Challenge. Winner will get mentioned in the new TV show (which will premiere Jan 3 at 9PM, btw), and be promoted on the ABC Family website.

So, contestants were all sent a huge trunk full of props all numbered (still no idea what I'll be doing with each one yet). Challenges will be sent to us twice a week giving us further instructions for each prop.

The first challenge was to use the $50 gift card, go shopping, and create a shopping haul video. So voilà! Here is my video:

The following drink recipe for the "Tinsel Bellini" comes from Marie Claire. To make a drink for one, you'll need:

2 oz. HPNOTIQ
1 oz. limoncello
1 oz. Champagne
Splash of lime juice

Directions:
Rim the Champagne flute with a light coat of sugar. Pour chilled HPNOTIQ, limoncello, and Champagne into the champagne flute. Add a splash of lime juice.

I received these beautiful earrings from t+j designs. It's the crystal bauble earrings from their Fall collection. They're my absolute favorite pair of earrings at the moment. I just adore the colors of the gems, and love the uniqueness of the cluster look. They're the perfect size to wear everyday at work, but fun enough to wear on a night out.

Continuing with the holiday theme, I found this recipe for a "Cuppa Good Cheer" drink at What to Drink. The following recipe shows you how to make one drink.

Ingredients:

1.5 oz. SKYY Infusions Cherry
0.5 oz. white creme de cacao
4 oz. Hot Cocoa
1 oz. Half 'n Half
Whipped Cream
Maraschino Cherry

Directions:
Combine all ingredients into a holiday mug and top with whipped cream, red sprinkles and a Maraschino Cherry.

I had the delightful opportunity to review this lovely handbag from Handbag Heaven. Okay, so I may have one too many satchels but I just can't resist this type of bag! It was actually bigger & roomier than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise. I also chose it in navy instead of black because I felt it gave it a more modern feel to it, and it still goes with pretty much everything!

So for a more casual look, I swapped my heeled boots for a more comfortable pair & my skirt for some jeggings. The first outfit was what I actually wore to the Assembled Conference earlier this month. This second outfit is what I wore recently, just having a relaxing weekend at home (finally done with classes for the semester!). Without realizing it, I wore the same Rachel Roy necklace - totally loving it since I received it to wear for Lucky Shops. Anyway, the bag still came in handy for anything I needed. It actually has two compartments when you open it with a zip pocket inside along with two other small pockets for your phone/keys/misc. It also has a zip pocket on the outside on the back -- definitely one of my favorite features on a handbag to grab something easily.

Tasty Thursdays: Grilled Sesame Chicken Breast

The following recipe from Fast Recipes serves for 4 people, and shows you how to make grilled sesame chicken breasts. I personally haven't tried it myself but it does sound easy to make!

Ingredients:

1 Tbs. Brown Sugar or brown sugar substitute;
3 Tbs. Reduced-sodium soy sauce;
1 Tsp. Sesame seeds;
1 Tbs. Sesame Seeds;
2 cl Garlic; chopped
1/8 Tsp. Black pepper; Fresh
4 oz. Chicken breast halves; - with skin removed

Directions:
Combine all ingredients except chicken in a shallow dish. Mix well. Add chicken, turning to coat. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator at least 2 hours. Remove chicken from marinate. Put the marinade aside. Grill 4 to 5 inches from medium-hot coals for 15 inches from medium-hot for 15 minutes. Turn and baste frequently with reserve marinade.
